Q: |
What are FrontPage Extensions? |
A: |
They are a set of server-side applications that enable you to incorporate the following advanced features without having to write the complex server-side programs typically required:
|
Q: |
What versions of FrontPage are supported? |
A: |
Our web server should support all versions of FrontPage up to the latest version, which is FrontPage 2002. |
Q: |
How do I get FrontPage extensions installed for my district's website? |
A: |
Click here to request FrontPage extensions for your district's website. You will be notified via email or phone when complete. |
Q: |
Do I have to use FrontPage extensions on my district's web site? |
A: |
No. FrontPage extensions will only be enabled upon request. |
Q: |
How do I publish a website using FrontPage? |
A: |
Once you have created your site in FrontPage and saved it on your computer, you may publish your site by clicking on "File" and selecting the option to "Publish Web." You will then be prompted to "Specify the location to publish your web to." In the space provided, make sure it reads "http://yourdistrict.ednet10.net". (Replace where it says yourdistrict with your school district's name. Do not include "isd". Example: If I were publishing the website for Richardson ISD, I would publish to the location http://richardson.ednet10.net.) Next you will be prompted to enter your username and password. These should be the same as your previous FTP account. Finally, you should see a dialog box pop up stating your website was published successfully. Click "Done".

Q: |
What makes FrontPage different from other web design programs and regular html? |
A: |
Like other web design programs, FrontPage provides an easy-to-use "drag and drop" environment for creating websites. No knowledge of HTML is required to use FrontPage. The key difference between FrontPage and other web design programs is FrontPage's use of server-side extensions. These server-side applications enable users to incorporate advanced features in their website without having to write complex server-side programs that are typically required. A few of these features include link bars, top 10 lists, form handlers, discussions, full text searches, hit counters, and categories. |
Q: |
Can I still update my site using html or a web design program other than FrontPage? |
A: |
Yes. Since FrontPage extensions will only be activated on a site by request, you will still be able to make changes to your site as before. The only thing that will change is the address (or hostname) you will use to upload your files. You will now use districtname.ednet10.net (where districtname is the name of your district) as the address (or hostname). |
Q: |
How can I delete pages from my published FrontPage web? |
A: |
One way to delete or edit pages within a FrontPage web that has been published is to actually do the work directly on the server. To open your FrontPage web on the server follow these steps:
|
Q: |
How do I back up the contents of my FrontPage web? |
A: |
If you are composing / editing your web on your local computer, then publishing the changes to the server you already have a local copy of your web.
|
Q: |
If I use FrontPage, do I still need to "FTP" my web pages to the server? |
A: |
No. It is not recommended that you "FTP" files to the server in order to upload and edit your web page. If you are using FrontPage, the "Publish Web" feature is much simpler and more efficient. FTP access will be granted to FrontPage enabled accounts by request. Click here to request FTP access to your FrontPage enabled web. |

Q: |
Do I get a unique IP address for my account? |
A: |
No. We are using a "name-based" system with host headers. This system is more efficient than traditional IP-based hosting and helps keep us in compliance with A.R.I.N.'s guidelines for IP utilization. If you feel a unique IP address is absolutely necessary for your site, please call 972-348-1168 to make a request. |
Q: |
Why can't I access my site via FTP from a location other than a building within my District? |
A: |
In order to maintain high levels of security for our districts, FTP is no longer available to locations outside our firewall. FTP sends userIDs and passwords in clear text, which can present a significant security risk. A more secure alternative to FTP is to use Web Folders instead. Q: |
What address do I use for transferring files to my site via FTP? |
A: |
If your site is hosted by Region 10, simply use yourdistrict.ednet10.net or www2.ednet10.net as your hostname, then type in your district's FTP username and password. If your site is not hosted by Region 10, your ISP will provide you this information. |
